MSc Urban Studies

Estonia Estonian Academy of Arts

The MSc Urban Studies at the Estonian Academy of Arts (EKA) is a two-year, full-time interdisciplinary master’s programme in Tallinn, Estonia. The programme comprises 120 ECTS and is taught entirely in English. It focuses on rethinking cities and understanding the complex social, environmental and spatial changes that shape contemporary urban life.

The programme explores important urban issues including urban nature, housing, infrastructure, architecture, landscapes, technology, planning, policy and social equity. It examines urban change in the context of global capitalist dynamics and persistent social hierarchies, with particular attention to affordability, reparative action and the transformation of planning, policy and society.

Interdisciplinary Approach

Urban Studies brings together students from different academic and professional backgrounds. The programme is designed for architects who want to understand broader urban issues, social studies graduates who want to connect theoretical knowledge with real neighbourhoods, and artists who want to engage with urban environments. Applicants may have previous education in architecture, landscape architecture, geography, construction, art history, sociology, urban planning, political science, or other arts and humanities fields.

The programme approaches urbanism as both an everyday experience and a professional and academic field. A central concern is social equity across built and natural environments, encouraging students to critically examine how cities are planned, developed and experienced.

Skills and Learning

Students develop a broad range of analytical, practical and creative skills throughout the programme. These include:

  • Critical thinking
  • Institutional literacy
  • Strategic planning
  • Community engagement
  • Fieldwork
  • Academic writing
  • Basic design methods
  • Mapping
  • GIS
  • Urban theory and design
  • Collaborative research

Learning is supported through small-group and student-led activities, with close guidance from tutors. Students participate in lectures, seminars, skill-based classes, site visits, collaborative research, fieldwork and project-based creation.

Programme Structure

Urban Studies classes combine academic study with practical and community-oriented activities. Students work with different forms of urban research and creative production, including academic essays, collective writing, critical map-making, site-specific actions, audio walks and self-organised workshops.

The programme encourages students to engage with both human and non-human communities through installations, interventions and other initiatives. Reading and writing are important components of the programme and are used to develop curiosity, critical thinking and independent perspectives on urban questions.

Students are also immersed in Tallinn’s diverse neighbourhoods and infrastructural hinterlands. Field trips complement this experience, with recent destinations including Berlin and Lima. These activities place particular emphasis on urban justice, everyday reproduction, geographical difference and positionality.

Urban Justice and Community Engagement

A significant aspect of the programme is understanding how different communities experience urban change. Students are encouraged to develop non-extractive forms of engagement with communities across different geographical contexts.

This approach is particularly relevant during the thesis phase. Recent thesis topics have included anti-gentrification movements in Lisbon, urban river regulation in Vienna, post-disaster recovery management in Turkey, and the challenges faced by coastal fishing communities in Latin America in response to development pressures.
