The Studies of Cultures PhD at Tallinn University is a 4-year doctoral programme in the humanities, allowing students to specialize in areas such as Asian Studies, Anthropology, Estonian Literature and Culture, Philosophy, English Literatures and Cultures, Cultural Geography, Theory of Culture, Romance Studies, and German or Slavonic Literatures and Cultures. The programme supports interdisciplinary research combining practical and theoretical approaches, with studies organized closely with a supervisor. The programme is taught in Estonian, and the official full-time study period is four years.
Applicants must have a completed Master’s degree or equivalent and provide proof of English proficiency. For the 2026 summer admission, applicants must submit a research proposal of approximately 5 pages / 2,500 words, developed and signed by a prospective supervisor, along with a teaching assignment plan, CV, and proof of English proficiency. The admission exam is an interview based on the submitted research proposal and other documents.
