The Humanities doctoral programme at the University of Tartu is a research-focused PhD programme covering 22 specialisations, including languages and literature, translation studies, history, archaeology, philosophy, linguistics, religious studies, theology, semiotics, and culture studies. Doctoral studies centre on research and the completion and defence of an original doctoral thesis, supported by a 30 ECTS study module and an individual selection of courses and training developed with the supervisor.
The programme is a doctoral-level programme taught in Estonian, English, and Russian, with a duration of 4 years (240 ECTS) and is based in Tartu. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent qualification and demonstrate English language proficiency according to the university’s language requirements. Applicants must submit a doctoral thesis project and CV, followed by an interview if the thesis project is assessed positively.
