MSc Industrial Engineering and Management

The MSc Industrial Engineering and Management at Tallinn University of Technology is a full-time, postgraduate Master’s programme designed to develop advanced knowledge and practical skills across both engineering and business management. The programme is delivered in English and has a nominal duration of 2 years (120 ECTS), leading to the degree of Master of Science in Engineering (MSc).

Programme Structure

The 2-year, 120-ECTS curriculum is divided into several study components:

General Studies

General studies introduce students to important business and management concepts, including business process management, strategic and financial management, business negotiation, intercultural communication, industrial marketing, and techno-economic paradigms.

Core Studies

Core studies provide advanced technical knowledge in areas such as industrial robotics and advanced manufacturing, production digitalisation, computer-aided manufacturing, modelling and testing of products and processes, and computer-aided design.

Special Studies

Students can develop expertise through two specialisation areas:

  • Industrial Engineering — including production engineering, planning and control, optimisation methods, Internet of Things for Industry, technology-based entrepreneurship, and innovation.
  • Operations Management — including quality management, lean operations, managerial psychology, supply chain management, and project management.

Free Choice Courses

Students can select from a wide range of courses offered by the university, allowing them to further develop their academic and professional interests.

Graduation Thesis

The programme concludes with an individual graduation thesis, which involves research into a topic related to manufacturing planning, management, engineering, or economic analysis of production. The thesis provides students with a deeper understanding of their selected subject and can address real-world industrial problems.

Practical and Industry-Oriented Learning

The programme combines academic studies with practical exposure to industry. Teaching staff include industry lecturers and international professors, while students can participate in on-site visits to manufacturing companies and relevant organisations.

Students also have opportunities to work with equipment and technologies at Protolab, including 3D scanners, 3D printers, and laser sintering units, as well as facilities in the Flexible Manufacturing Systems and Robotics Demo Centre, which include virtual and augmented reality technologies.

The study process also uses professional ERP, PLM, CAD, CAE, and Factory Floor Planning software. Interactive activities covering areas such as Lean production, 5S, production management, and optimisation are incorporated into the learning process.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in a speciality related to engineering, manufacturing, product development, or economics.

Applicants generally need to have achieved at least 60% of the highest possible CGPA. If the Bachelor’s average grade is below 60%, the requirement may be considered fulfilled upon the programme manager’s proposal if the applicant achieved at least 60% of the maximum possible grade during previous Master’s studies. This option applies only when the Bachelor’s CGPA is not below 50%.

A GRE General Test result must also be submitted as it is a preliminary requirement for applying. The programme specifies that applicants should consult the university’s information regarding the required threshold score and possible exemption criteria.

Entry qualification documents are accepted in English or Estonian. Applicants must upload official translations together with their original educational documents when required.

English Language Requirements

Applicants must provide adequate proof of English language proficiency. The accepted certificates and required results are specified by Tallinn University of Technology.

English language proof may only be waived when an applicant has completed on-site secondary education, a Bachelor’s degree, or a Master’s degree taught fully in English in one of the specified countries: EU/EEA member states, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom.

Applicants who studied in English but did not complete their studies on-site in one of the specified countries are required to provide an internationally recognised English language test indicated by the university.

Additional Admission Requirements

In addition to academic and English-language requirements, the programme requires a proctored online test and an online interview as part of the admission process.
