The African Studies bachelor’s programme at Leiden University provides in-depth knowledge of Africa from an Africa-centric perspective, while critically examining external and often Eurocentric perspectives. Students can explore Africa as a continent, specific regions, or individual countries through an interdisciplinary approach.
The programme combines History, Linguistics, Anthropology, Literature, and Arts to provide a broad understanding of Africa’s diverse cultures, languages, history, and contemporary global role. Students learn Swahili and spend an entire semester in an African country of their choice. The programme can also be tailored around a specific discipline, theme, region, country, or Africa as a whole.
