Slovenia Koper University of Primorska (UP)

Bachelor of Science in Bioinformatics at University of Primorska

The Bachelor of Science in Bioinformatics at the University of Primorska (UP), offered by the Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies (FAMNIT), is a three-year, full-time undergraduate academic programme based in Koper and partly in Izola, Slovenia. The programme is conducted in Slovenian and English, with the 2026/27 admission information identifying English as partly available. It comprises six semesters and 180 ECTS credits, combining biological sciences, mathematics, computer science, and information technology to prepare students for analysing complex biological systems and solving scientific problems through computational methods.

Curriculum and Learning Outcomes

The programme provides interdisciplinary knowledge in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, genetics, mathematics, computer science, and informatics. Students develop practical and theoretical skills in biological data analysis, mathematical modelling, algorithm development, database-related technologies, and computational problem-solving. Particular attention is given to critical thinking, scientific communication, project-based learning, and responsible and ethical handling of biological data.

Practical Training and Academic Requirements

In the third year, students may choose a three-week practical training placement worth 6 ECTS instead of one external elective course. Training takes place in a professional work environment under the supervision of a qualified mentor in bioinformatics. Students normally need at least 42 ECTS credits from their current academic year and must complete previous-year requirements to progress. Graduation requires 180 ECTS credits, completion of all academic assessments, and preparation and defence of a Final Project Paper.

Career Opportunities

Graduates may pursue employment in healthcare institutions, pharmaceutical companies, public and private laboratories, agricultural and food industries, environmental organisations, research institutions, and information technology companies. Opportunities also exist in public administration, statistical organisations, financial institutions, and scientific research. The programme additionally provides a foundation for postgraduate study in bioinformatics and related disciplines.

Tuition Fees and Accreditation

Full-time tuition is free for eligible students from EU/EEA countries, Switzerland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Serbia. Non-EU students should consult the university’s official tuition fee schedule, as the historically reported bachelor’s tuition range of €2,400–€3,750. The programme is officially recognised and accredited in accordance with the Slovenian Higher Education Act.
