The Bachelor of Archival Studies, officially described as Archival Science in the detailed programme information, at Alma Mater Europaea University (AMEU) is a three-year, first-cycle professional undergraduate programme in Slovenia. The programme consists of six semesters and carries 180 ECTS credits. Delivered part-time, it combines archival science, information technology, history, law, and records management to prepare students for the organisation, preservation, protection, and management of physical and digital archival records.

Curriculum and Learning Outcomes

The programme provides interdisciplinary education in archival science, diplomatics, archival history, business informatics, electronic archives, research methodology, and records management. Students develop knowledge of document classification, appraisal, arrangement, archival legislation, physical preservation, conservation, and restoration. The curriculum also covers digital recordkeeping, information security, electronic document management, and long-term digital preservation. Elective subjects include Latin paleography, electronic archives, cultural history, and information security.

Practical Training and Professional Development

Practical training is an essential component of the programme. During the third year, students complete an eight-week professional placement worth 10 ECTS credits, alongside a related project assignment worth 5 ECTS credits. Training provides practical experience in archival documentation, records arrangement, digitalisation, document preservation, and information management. Placements may be organised by the faculty or arranged independently by students.

Study Structure and Learning Flexibility

The programme is offered part-time, with lectures generally scheduled in the afternoon between 16:00 and 20:00. Recorded lectures are available through the Moodle learning platform. Practical classes take place on-site or online depending on the course, and full attendance is required. Examinations may be conducted online or at university locations, including Maribor and Ljubljana, depending on the course arrangements.

Career Opportunities

Graduates may pursue professional opportunities in public and private archives, government administration, municipalities, museums, libraries, cultural institutions, research organisations, and companies managing large volumes of documentation. The programme also develops competencies relevant to digital records management, electronic archiving, information systems, and document preservation services.

Tuition Fees and Accreditation

The detailed programme information states annual tuition of €2,900, while the initial 2025/2026 programme summary lists €5,500 annually. These conflicting figures require confirmation before publication. The programme is accredited by the Slovenian Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (NAKVIS), with its first accreditation awarded on 15 December 2016.
