Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence at University of Ljubljana

The Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Ljubljana (UL), offered through the Faculty of Computer and Information Science (FRI), is a two-year international postgraduate programme comprising four semesters and 120 ECTS credits.

The programme is part of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Artificial Intelligence (EMAI), delivered through a consortium of four European research universities. It combines theoretical foundations of artificial intelligence with practical applications, advanced research, and opportunities for international academic mobility.

Students develop knowledge of intelligent systems and advanced AI applications while benefiting from interdisciplinary research environments, international collaboration, and specialised study pathways.

Curriculum and Learning Outcomes

The EMAI programme provides a comprehensive academic framework combining artificial intelligence theory, technical applications, and research-oriented learning.

Students acquire foundational knowledge of artificial intelligence before progressing toward specialised areas of AI research and development.

The curriculum enables students to explore complex artificial intelligence applications through advanced academic study and practical research activities.

The programme includes four specialisation areas:

  • Intelligent Decision Making
  • Robotics
  • Cybersecurity
  • Data Science

Students develop expertise in their chosen field while working toward a master’s thesis.

International Study and Erasmus Mundus Mobility

The programme is delivered jointly by four European universities:

  1. Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) – Barcelona, Spain
  2. Sapienza University of Rome – Rome, Italy
  3. Radboud University – Nijmegen, Netherlands
  4. University of Ljubljana – Ljubljana, Slovenia

During the first academic year, students study in three different countries.

In the second year, students can select a consortium university for their master’s thesis and specialise in an associated research area.

The programme also benefits from connections with the University College London Centre for Artificial Intelligence, other international research centres, and 12 industrial partners.

Specialisation Tracks

1. Intelligent Decision Making – Spain

Students can select the Intelligent Decision Making strand associated with Pompeu Fabra University in Spain.

2. Robotics – Italy

The Robotics strand is associated with Sapienza University of Rome and provides a research pathway in robotics.

3. Cybersecurity – Netherlands

The Cybersecurity strand is associated with Radboud University in the Netherlands.

4. Data Science – Slovenia

The Data Science strand is associated with the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia.

Each specialisation involves a master’s thesis project carried out in close cooperation with an academic research group or an industrial environment.

Research and Professional Development

The EMAI programme offers opportunities to participate in research projects within European universities and associated industrial organisations.

Students can conduct their master’s thesis in an academic or professional research environment, allowing them to apply knowledge of artificial intelligence to advanced technical and scientific challenges.

The programme is designed to develop the expertise required for advanced work in artificial intelligence research and related technological fields.

Scholarships and Selection Procedure

The EMAI consortium evaluates applications through an academic selection process.

Eligible applicants are assessed on academic excellence, relevant practical or professional experience, and inclusiveness.

A selection committee comprising academic representatives from the partner universities finalises the assessment before April, and application results are published in April.

Scholarships are allocated to selected eligible applicants according to their position in the evaluation ranking. The committee may also interview applicants.

Career Opportunities

The programme prepares graduates for advanced professional and research opportunities involving artificial intelligence.

Its specialist pathways support careers and research in intelligent decision-making systems, robotics, cybersecurity, and data science.

Graduates may apply their knowledge in research institutions, technology organisations, and industrial environments working with AI applications.
