The MSc Physics and Astrophysics programme at the University of Nova Gorica is a two-year, second-cycle Master’s degree offered by the School of Science in Ajdovščina, Slovenia. Delivered in English, the programme consists of four semesters and carries 120 ECTS credits. It provides advanced theoretical, experimental and computational knowledge in physics, with specialised study opportunities in astrophysics and solid state physics.
The programme builds on undergraduate-level physics education and emphasises scientific research, international collaboration and the application of modern experimental techniques. Students develop the skills required for advanced scientific investigation, technological problem-solving and further academic studies.
The programme provides a broad foundation in theoretical and experimental physics while developing advanced mathematical, computational and scientific research competencies.
Students learn to investigate natural phenomena, apply scientific methodologies, analyse complex physical systems and use modern experimental equipment. The curriculum incorporates advanced mathematical methods, numerical modelling, data acquisition, scientific communication and independent research.
The programme offers two specialised study modules:
Astrophysics: This module focuses on astrophysical phenomena, cosmology, relativity, high-energy astrophysics, dark matter physics and the physical processes governing the universe. Students explore particle acceleration, astrophysical objects and observational and experimental approaches to modern astrophysics.
Solid State Physics: This module focuses on advanced quantum mechanics, functional materials, nanoelectronics, phase transitions, surface physics, semiconductor devices, magnetism and superconductivity. Students develop specialised knowledge of the physical properties of materials and their applications in modern technologies.
Scientific research is a central component of the programme. Students participate in research activities and practical experiments while developing the ability to work independently and collaborate within international research teams.
The curriculum includes Research Work I and II, advanced laboratory activities, computational modelling and a Master’s thesis. Students acquire experience in experimental investigation, research data processing, numerical methods and scientific communication.
The programme also emphasises collaboration with international research institutions and provides opportunities to develop research skills relevant to advanced scientific and technological environments.
Graduates are prepared for professional opportunities in scientific research, high-technology companies, research institutions, government agencies and other organisations requiring advanced physics knowledge.
The programme develops transferable skills in mathematical modelling, computational analysis, experimental techniques, scientific problem-solving and international research collaboration.
Graduates may continue their academic studies through doctoral programmes in Physics or Materials at the Graduate School of the University of Nova Gorica.
