Description:
Conservation of Heritage Materials and Objects is a full-time engineering study programme offered by the Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology at Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. The programme combines chemical engineering, materials science, physics, and conservation science to support the analysis, protection, and preservation of cultural heritage. Students study traditional and modern materials, material degradation, ageing processes, conservation technologies, and the scientific methods used to assess historical artefacts. The standard duration is 2 years, the teaching language is Slovak, and graduates are awarded the academic degree inžinier (Ing.).
The programme develops expertise in laboratory analysis, material characterization, artefact authentication, damage assessment, and the evaluation of conservation and restoration procedures. Students learn to interpret experimental data, investigate the physical and chemical processes affecting heritage materials, and develop appropriate strategies for preventive conservation and stabilization. The interdisciplinary curriculum also incorporates informatics, art history, conservation ethics, and communication, preparing graduates to collaborate with restorers, conservators, archaeologists, architects, museum curators, and other heritage specialists.
Graduates are prepared for professional roles in museums, archives, libraries, galleries, cultural heritage institutions, and specialized research and diagnostic laboratories. Potential positions include conservation scientist, analytical chemist, chemical specialist in research and development, chemical technologist, and cultural heritage conservation specialist. Graduates can contribute to the scientific assessment of historical objects, quality control of conservation interventions, and the development of technologies for protecting cultural heritage. The programme also provides preparation for further doctoral studies.
