The Bachelor of Arts in African Studies at Leiden University provides interdisciplinary, Africa-centric study of the continent, its regions and individual countries. The programme approaches Africa with a critical perspective on external and often Eurocentric views, covering areas including History, Linguistics, Anthropology, Literature and Arts. Students can tailor their studies around a specific discipline, theme, region, country or Africa as a whole.

Programme Details

The programme is taught in English and includes Swahili language acquisition as well as an entire semester spent in an African country of the student’s choice. It comprises 180 ECTS credits. For the 2026/2027 academic year, tuition is €2,694 for EU/EEA students and €14,300 for non-EU/EEA students. The programme has a start date of September 1, 2026. Accreditation is provided through NVAO.
