What the program is

The Master’s programme in Anthropology of Religion and Culture at the University of Groningen explores how religion and culture shape societies and how cultural differences relate to local, regional and global challenges. It examines everyday practices such as food, sexuality, ritual and belief within broader cultural contexts, with attention to issues including migration and climate change.

Study structure and requirements

The programme is taught in English and leads to a Master of Arts degree. It has a duration of 1 year and comprises 60 ECTS credits. Its approach is holistic, comparative and ethnographic, with fieldwork forming an integral part of the programme. Students also critically reflect on traditional anthropological methods. For 2026/2027, tuition is €2,694 for EU/EEA students, €19,900 for Non-EU/EEA students and €16,900 at the institutional rate.
