What the program is

The Cancer, Stem Cells and Developmental Biology Master’s programme at Utrecht University explores embryonic growth, stem cells, evolution, and development in relation to health and disease. It combines research in oncology, molecular developmental biology, and genetics in animals and humans, with students developing practical research skills using modern techniques in genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics.

Study structure and requirements

The programme is taught in English and lasts 2 years. It includes a 9-month major research project and a 6-month minor research project, with the possibility of completing the minor project abroad. Students also take 10 weeks of theoretical courses, attend biomedical and life-science research seminars, and complete a final Master’s thesis based on literature research. Tuition for 2026/2027 is €2,694 per year for EU/EEA students. Language requirements include Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English B1, Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English C1, IELTS 6.5 overall with IELTS writing 6.0, TOEFL 580 paper-based, 237 computer-based, or 93 internet-based.
