Description:

About the Program

Conservation of Heritage Materials and Objects is a full-time engineering study programme offered by the Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology at Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. The programme combines chemical engineering, materials science, physics, and conservation science to support the scientific examination, protection, and preservation of cultural heritage. Students explore the properties of traditional and modern materials, ageing and degradation processes, conservation technologies, and scientific methods for analysing historical artefacts. The standard duration is 2 years, the teaching language is English, and graduates are awarded the academic degree inžinier (Ing.).

Curriculum and Practical Skills

Students develop practical skills in laboratory analysis, material characterization, artefact authentication, damage assessment, and the evaluation of conservation and restoration procedures. The programme covers the physical and chemical principles of analytical methods, preventive conservation, material stabilization, and the interpretation of experimental data. Students also develop knowledge of informatics, art history, conservation ethics, and interdisciplinary collaboration, preparing them to work with restorers, conservators, museum curators, architects, and archaeologists.

Career Opportunities

Graduates can pursue careers in museums, archives, libraries, galleries, cultural heritage institutions, and specialized research and diagnostic laboratories. Potential roles include conservation scientist, analytical chemist, chemical specialist in research and development, chemical technologist, and cultural heritage conservation specialist. Their skills support the assessment of historical objects, the monitoring of material deterioration, quality control of conservation interventions, and the development of appropriate preservation strategies. Graduates may also continue to doctoral studies.
