What the program is

The Mathematics and Computer Science doctoral programme at the University of Tartu is a research-focused PhD programme with two specialisations: Mathematical Sciences and Computer Science. Mathematical Sciences covers areas such as algebra, functional analysis, equations, geometry and topology, actuarial and financial engineering, statistics, probability theory, and mathematical didactics. Computer Science includes data science and AI, software engineering, programming languages and systems, natural language processing, security, theoretical computer science, and distributed systems.

The programme is a doctoral-level programme taught in Estonian and English, with a duration of 4 years (240 ECTS) and is based in Tartu. Doctoral researchers follow an individual research plan and complete 30 ECTS of additional studies, including specialist knowledge and transferable skills training, before writing and publicly defending an original doctoral thesis.
