The MSc Data Science programme at the University of Primorska is a two-year, second-cycle Master’s degree offered by the Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Information Technologies (FAMNIT) in Koper, Slovenia. Delivered in English and Slovenian, the full-time programme consists of four semesters and carries 120 ECTS credits. It combines computer science, mathematics and interdisciplinary knowledge to develop advanced expertise in data collection, processing, statistical analysis and the extraction of valuable insights from complex datasets.
The programme provides comprehensive theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the collection, management and analysis of structured and unstructured data, including text, images, audio and video. Students develop advanced competencies in statistical and algorithmic methods, analytical reasoning, modern programming tools and data-driven problem-solving.
The curriculum emphasises independent data analysis, efficient computational solutions, critical thinking and the responsible use of data. Students develop the ability to apply mathematical and computational techniques to real-world challenges in industry, research and public policy.
The programme integrates theoretical learning with practical applications, allowing students to develop technical expertise through data analysis and computational problem-solving activities.
Students are encouraged to collaborate with industry partners and research institutions, gaining practical experience in applying data science methodologies to professional and scientific challenges. The programme also promotes teamwork, analytical communication and ethical data handling.
Applicants are eligible if they have completed a first-cycle Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, computer science or bioinformatics.
Graduates from other academic disciplines may also apply, provided they complete supplementary academic requirements ranging from 10 to 60 ECTS credits in subjects associated with Mathematics and Computer Science. The Faculty’s academic committee determines these additional requirements individually based on each applicant’s previous qualifications.
Applicants who have completed comparable qualifications abroad may also be admitted after successful recognition of their education under the applicable qualification recognition procedures.
If enrolment places are limited, candidates are selected according to their average undergraduate academic grade.
