PhD Built Environment – University of Ljubljana

The PhD in Built Environment at the University of Ljubljana (UL) is a four-year interdisciplinary doctoral programme offered in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The programme comprises eight semesters and 240 ECTS credits and is delivered jointly by the Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering and the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering.

The programme focuses on scientific research in civil engineering, geodesy, geology, spatial planning and land management. Its main objective is to develop highly qualified researchers who can investigate complex problems, apply advanced scientific methodologies, critically evaluate research findings and transfer new technologies and knowledge into professional practice.

Scientific Fields and Research Areas

The doctoral programme offers four scientific fields: Geodesy, Geology, Civil Engineering, and Spatial Planning and Land Management. Students develop research competencies relevant to their selected field while gaining the ability to approach complex professional and scientific challenges from an interdisciplinary perspective.

Research Objectives and Professional Development

Doctoral candidates are trained in independent scientific thinking, advanced problem-solving and the application of contemporary research methods. The programme emphasises critical evaluation of scientific results and the practical application of emerging knowledge and technologies.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must hold an eligible second-cycle Master’s degree, an integrated Master’s qualification carrying 300 ECTS credits or another recognised academic qualification. Certain applicants with previous professional specialisations may be required to complete additional coursework of up to 60 ECTS credits.

Foreign university graduates are eligible to apply, subject to recognition of their previous qualifications under University of Ljubljana regulations.

Application and Research Supervision

Applicants must submit their applications through the official eVÅ  online portal. Written acceptance from a doctoral mentor or co-mentor and a brief conceptual outline of the proposed research must be provided no later than enrolment.

Selection Criteria

Where enrolment is restricted, selection considers the applicant’s academic grade-point average, thesis grade and performance in a written examination covering natural sciences and engineering.

Qualifying prior scientific and professional achievements may substitute for part of the written examination assessment.
