What the program is

The PhD studies at Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) provide opportunities for advanced academic research and the development of highly qualified specialists. Doctoral candidates conduct independent scientific research and experimental social and cultural development while addressing important issues in Lithuanian, European, and global science.

Research fields and study formats

VMU offers doctoral studies across natural sciences, humanities, social sciences, technological sciences, and agricultural sciences. Research fields include Ethnology, Philology, Philosophy, History and Archaeology, Art Criticism, Theology, Education Science, Economics, Political Sciences, Psychology, Sociology, Law, Management, Communication and Information, Biology, Ecology and Environmental Science, Biochemistry, Informatics, Agronomy, Forestry, Environmental Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

Doctoral studies are available as full-time (4 years) or part-time (6 years). During the programme, candidates must pass doctoral examinations and earn 30 ECTS credits, publish at least two research articles in peer-reviewed journals, participate in at least two international conferences, and complete an internship at a foreign research or academic institution.

Scholarships & Tuition

State-funded places with scholarships and self-funded places are available. The scholarship is EUR 1,406 per month during the first year and EUR 1,628 per month during the second–fourth years. Tuition is EUR 12,680 per year for full-time studies and EUR 8,453 per year for part-time studies.
