Job Description
Trane Technologies is seeking an Embedded Software Architect / Lead Developer for its climate technology business. The position can be performed in Oberhausen, Germany, Bloomington, USA, or Davidson, USA; the supplied job listing specifically displays Oberhausen as the location. The role is focused on software architecture for power electronics solutions used in transportation and stationary HVAC applications, including variable frequency drives (VFDs) and higher-level control systems.
The position involves providing technical direction for embedded software development, architecture design, code reviews, testing and CI/CD strategies, hardware collaboration, cybersecurity and functional safety compliance, product requirements, technology evaluation, and responsible AI use throughout the development lifecycle. The ideal candidate has at least 8 years of relevant software development experience, strong embedded C/C++ skills, experience with ARM-based MCUs/MPUs and DSPs, low-level firmware, CI/CD, testing, functional safety and cybersecurity, plus leadership and mentoring experience.
Requirements
- At least 8 years of relevant professional experience in software development.
- Experience with software architecture and system design.
- Ability to design, communicate and maintain scalable and maintainable software architectures.
- Experience developing embedded control systems with memory, performance, peripheral and real-time constraints.
- Practical experience with ARM-based MCUs/MPUs such as STM32 or Renesas RA and DSPs.
- Familiarity with time-critical applications.
- Strong C/C++ skills for embedded systems.
- Professional experience with toolchains, debuggers and profilers.
- Experience with low-level firmware, interrupt handling, peripheral drivers, board commissioning and hardware analysis.
- Experience using oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.
- Confident use of Git, Make/CMake or similar build systems.
- Experience with automated test frameworks and CI/CD pipelines.
- Understanding of code-quality practices and static code analysis.
- Experience with unit, integration and system testing.
- Knowledge of relevant coding standards and development process models.
- Understanding of functional safety and embedded cybersecurity.
- Preferably at least 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role such as architect or comparable senior role.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to lead design reviews and communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Strategic thinking and pragmatic implementation skills.
- Experience mentoring and developing engineers.
- Power electronics experience is highly welcome.
- Experience with model-based design tools such as Simulink or PLECS is desirable.
- Experience with agile or iterative development methodologies is desirable.
- Awareness of emerging technologies and AI/ML applications in embedded systems is desirable.
