The Semiconductor Laboratory (HLL) of the Max Planck Society is seeking a Scientist specializing in Quantum Sensors and Qubit Technology to support research and development in advanced quantum-device technologies. Based at the research campus in Garching near Munich, the laboratory develops, fabricates, and tests semiconductor detectors for applications in X-ray astronomy, particle physics, and materials research.
The successful candidate will develop and optimize quantum sensor concepts based on qubit systems and quantum effects, perform numerical simulations and modeling, and evaluate physical processes, noise sources, and system-level performance. Responsibilities also include collaborating with technology development, engineering, and experimental teams, analyzing experimental data, refining physical models and sensor designs, and contributing to scientific publications, technical documentation, and intellectual property.
Applicants must hold a PhD in physics, electrical engineering, applied physics, quantum engineering, or a related field, with a background in quantum sensing, qubit control, and precision measurement. Experience in numerical simulation, modeling, and system design is required. Knowledge of cleanroom processes, semiconductor fabrication, Python, MATLAB, COMSOL, MEMS/NEMS, integrated sensors, or low-noise instrumentation is advantageous.
The position offers full-time employment at 39 hours per week, remuneration under the German public-sector TVöD (Bund) pay scale, an occupational pension scheme, flexible working hours, mobile-working opportunities, and professional development. The initial contract is limited to two years, with the possibility of subsequent permanent employment.
