Senior Software Engineer – Backend Platform

Job Description

Evolution is hiring a Senior Software Engineer – Backend Platform for a full-time, 100% on-site position in Stockholm, Sweden. This role offers the opportunity to help design and build a new platform from first principles, focusing on reliable, high-performance backend services and distributed systems.

The platform is designed to operate across regions and process thousands of real-money transactions per second, with strict consistency requirements. Low latency, correctness, performance, security, and reliability are fundamental engineering priorities.

Key Responsibilities

• Build and evolve backend services and platform components using Java and Spring Boot.
• Design APIs, data models, transaction flows, internal tools, and product-facing systems.
• Develop Kafka-based event-driven services and high-throughput transaction flows.
• Design event processing with attention to ordering, idempotency, retries, failure handling, and data consistency.
• Build and optimise PostgreSQL-backed systems with strong data integrity.
• Deploy, operate, and troubleshoot backend services in Kubernetes production environments.
• Make architectural decisions concerning consistency, latency, scalability, reliability, and security.
• Identify bottlenecks and improve throughput, observability, performance, and system quality.
• Own critical systems from design and implementation through production operation.
• Improve engineering standards through code reviews, design discussions, and knowledge sharing.

Qualifications and Skills

• Strong computer science fundamentals.
• Substantial experience building reliable, observable, high-performance backend systems.
• Strong professional experience with Java and Spring Boot.
• Experience with Kafka or similar event-streaming and message-driven systems.
• Strong understanding of PostgreSQL, relational database design, transactions, indexing, and query performance.
• Experience with Kubernetes-based production environments.
• Knowledge of distributed systems, concurrency, failure handling, consistency, and system design.
• Experience with high-throughput, low-latency, business-critical workloads.
• Understanding of production observability, including metrics, tracing, structured logging, alerting, and performance analysis.
• Security-conscious engineering practices and the ability to make architectural decisions with long-term consequences.
• Strong communication skills and end-to-end ownership of technical problems.

Experience in payments, fintech, gaming, trading, multi-region architecture, infrastructure as code, automated delivery pipelines, load testing, capacity planning, and incident response is an advantage.
