Software Engineer – Backend Platform

Job Description

Evolution is hiring a Software Engineer – Backend Platform for a full-time, 100% on-site position in Stockholm, Sweden. This role offers the opportunity to help build a new platform from the ground up, using modern backend technologies to solve complex engineering challenges under real production conditions.

The platform will operate across regions and process thousands of real-money transactions per second, with strict consistency requirements. Low latency, correctness, performance, reliability, and security are core design priorities.

Key Responsibilities

• Build backend services and platform components using Java and Spring Boot.
• Design and implement APIs, data models, internal tools, and product-facing systems.
• Develop Kafka-based event-driven architecture and high-throughput transaction flows.
• Work with PostgreSQL databases where performance, correctness, and observability are essential.
• Build services for modern containerised environments using Docker.
• Contribute to technical decisions involving consistency, latency, scalability, reliability, and security.
• Write clear, maintainable, well-tested, and robust code.
• Participate in code reviews, system design discussions, and technical decision-making.

Qualifications and Skills

• Strong computer science fundamentals.
• Comfort working with backend systems and databases.
• Ability to reason about correctness, concurrency, performance, and system design.
• Interest in distributed systems, event-driven architecture, and production-grade engineering.
• Ability to learn quickly and work across different parts of the technology stack.
• Self-motivation, ambition, and willingness to grow in a high-performing engineering environment.
• Interest in working in a small team with high standards and direct technical feedback.

Experience with Java, Spring Boot, Kafka or similar messaging systems, PostgreSQL, Docker, and performance-critical systems will strengthen an application. Internship experience or a few years of software engineering experience may be relevant. Strong academic results, technical projects, open-source contributions, research, competitive programming, hackathons, or other technical achievements are also valued.
